Time for Winter Car Repair? What is needed?

Winter is just around the corner, which means harsh weather conditions. These conditions can wreak havoc on your vehicle if it’s not prepared. It’s important to make sure that everything is working properly in your vehicle before winter comes especially in a place like Kalispell Montana. There are certain things you want to pay special attention to for the winter months. Here are a list of things to take care of for winter car repair.

Check your treads before the winter months. If the treads are low or if you find something like a nail, it’s time to replace your tires. You want to do this before winter, because the ground conditions are much worse thanks to the snow and ice. It takes longer to brake with worn tires and you want every possible second during the winter. Additionally check the tire pressure and make sure your tires are inflated properly. The driver side doorjamb typically has a sticker letting you know the proper pressure for each tire. Proper inflation allows your tires to perform the best.

Cooling system

Make sure there aren’t any leaks in your cooling system. If there are, make sure you get them fixed soon as possible. The cooling system is the lifeblood of your vehicle especially during winter when the anti-freeze that it pumps keeps the engine from freezing. An anti-freeze leak during winter could spell disaster. Your car could break down and you could be stuck somewhere in freezing temperatures. You also want to make sure that your cooling system has the proper anti-freeze to water mix for winter. This makes sure that your car runs its best during the harsh winter conditions.

Wiper blades

Replace your wiper blades if their old. Visibility is already compromised due to sleet and snow. Old wiper blades only make this worse, because they won’t get the snow off your windshield. Make sure you buy rubber clad blades to combat ice buildup, and give you the best visibility.

Car battery

Check your car battery before winter. This is going to do periodically, but especially during the winter months when you could potential be stranded in the cold without a heater. Most auto parts stores will test your battery for free. If there are any problems with your battery it’s best to replace it so that you don’t have any issue starting a car in the cold.
